Manchester, England: Community and Identity in a Changing City
Five week summer session – Applications are open for 2025!
Course credit: SOCY 4125 & 3325 (6 credit hours)
This five-week summer program will give students the opportunity to learn key theories and concepts in urban and community sociology; apply this knowledge to the study of contemporary Manchester; and participate in experiential learning with community organizations. Application deadline is February 1st 2025.

The Netherlands: Comparative Cultural Sociology
Spring break session – Applications are closed for 2025.
Course credit: SOCY 4371 (3 credit hours)
During this Spring Break study abroad program, students develop an understanding of theoretical and methodological tools used in comparative research on topics ranging from immigration to inequality and from globalization to government policy, all while engaged in a cross-national experience of their own. A key goal is that the experience will enhance student learning about Dutch society and culture while also enabling students to see their own country from a new perspective.

[new] Japan: Disaster Risk, Recovery, and Resilience

Explore Japan from a unique and timely perspective! Based in Sendai City at the top-ranked Tohoku University, this course explores the experience, aftermath and recovery of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. Take advantage of the opportunities for individual research projects, civic engagement partnerships, and guided tours of the places that make Japan so special and unique.

El Salvador: Habitat for Humanity Build
10 day summer session – Currently not accepting applications
Course credit: SOCY 4371 (3 credit hours)
This 10 day summer program integrates the sociological study of religion and movements for social justice with hands-on experience building affordable housing in El Salvadore. The build is a collaboration between the UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Campus Chapter, the local Charlotte affiliate of HFH and HFH El Salvador. The program offers an opportunity to build side-by-side with El Salvadorian families, learning about the culture and lives.
